Ingredients

Potato Base
  • 24 oz baby gold potatoes diced small
  • 2 tbsp olive oil for roasting
  • 1 tsp garlic salt to taste
Smash Burger Beef
  • 1.5 lb ground beef 80/20 blend
  • 1 tsp salt for seasoning
  • 1 tsp black pepper freshly ground
  • 1 tsp onion powder for flavor
Bowl Toppings
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese chopped
  • 0.5 cup dill pickles sliced
  • 0.5 cup red onion finely diced
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce fresh
  • 0.25 cup burger sauce optional drizzle

Equipment

  • Cast Iron Skillet
  • Baking Sheet
  • Spatula
  • Mixing bowl
  • Chef Knife

Method

Prepare the Potatoes
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F and toss the diced potatoes with olive oil and garlic salt on a large baking sheet.
  2. Roast the potatoes for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy.
Smash the Beef
  1. Divide the ground beef into four large balls and preheat a cast iron skillet over high heat.
  2. Place a beef ball in the dry skillet and use a heavy spatula to press it down until very thin and flat.
  3. Season the patty generously with salt, pepper, and onion powder, then sear for 2 minutes until a dark crust forms.
  4. Flip the patty, cook for 1 minute more, then break it apart into large, crispy chunks.
Assemble the Bowls
  1. Divide the roasted potatoes into four bowls and top with the crispy smashed beef chunks.
  2. Add the cheddar cheese immediately so it melts over the warm beef.
  3. Finish each bowl with shredded lettuce, pickles, red onion, and a drizzle of burger sauce before serving.

Notes

For the best texture, ensure the skillet is screaming hot before adding the beef to get those signature crispy edges. Store components separately for meal prep to keep the lettuce and pickles fresh and crunchy.
