Main Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease your 9x13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat and brown the ground beef until no pink remains, about 5-7 minutes.
- Drain any excess grease from the skillet before stirring in the chopped onions and minced garlic.
- Sauté the beef mixture for another 3-4 minutes until the onions are soft and fragrant.
- Spread the beef mixture into the bottom of the baking dish and layer the sliced potatoes evenly over the top.
- Season the potato layer with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and paprika before sprinkling with both cheeses.
- Pour the beef broth and optional milk around the edges, cover with foil, and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for a final 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are fork-tender and the cheese is golden.
Notes
For the best results, slice your potatoes very thin and uniform to ensure they cook through at the same rate as the beef. If you prefer a crispier top, turn on the broiler for the last 2 minutes of baking, but watch it closely to prevent the cheese from burning. This dish stores beautifully in an airtight container for up to three days and actually tastes even better the next day as the flavors meld.
